"BLUR CUT" for ADRIAN

First, from the Effects tab, add Gaussian Blur, Defocus and Soft Focus to the two clips (you don't need to add all of them but I think the three of them make the smoothest blur). Then set the IandO points on the "Amount" and "Strength" like above. You want the blur to be maxed at the transition's in-point then down to zero once the transition is complete (and vice versa for the outgoing clip).

Overlap the two clips you want to blur into each other. Then make the opacity levels match the blur.

Hope that makes sense.

For TIFF10 I was fortunate enough to work for Steve Rubin, VP of International Marketing @ EuropaCorp and all of the lovely people @ mPRm Public Relations. EuropaCorp featured two films in the festival: Les petits mouchoirs (Little White Lies) directed by Guillaume Canet (Tell No One, The Beach), starring Marion Cotillard and Gilles Lellouche; and L'homme qui voulait vivre sa vie (The Big Picture) directed by Eric Lartigau featuring Romain Duris (De battre mon coeur s'est arrêté), Branka Katic and Catherine Deneuve.

I managed to meet countless unbelievably talented directors, producers, actors/actresses, PR & marketing reps, etc.. My experiences with everyone were fantastic and at times surreal - from my first Red Carpet experience (for Les petits mouchoirs where the projector couldn't play the sous-titres, which was then followed by a very heart felt address by Guillaume) to champagne parties with Romain, Eric, Branka and Christophe Lambert, CEO of EuropaCorp, before the World Premiere of L'homme qui voulait vivre sa vie. I was also able to help on several red carpets including The Bang Bang Club starring Ryan Phillippe and Malin Åkerman.

Marion was voted Best Dressed by Toronto Life, and I may be a little bias, but she definitely deserves it - hands down - she is such a lovely person to be around, and always looked gorgeous (the inocent accent adds something as well)! On a side note, she was also recently on the cover of Vogue (US ad Paris).

I'm already dying to get to Paris, and now I have an excuse!

I am obsessed with Bas Jan Ader. I am fascinated by the mystery surrounding his final performance and I am swept away by the romanticism of his work. His more popular works can be viewed online via his website. There is also a fantastic documentary about his life and final voyage entitled "Here is Always Somewhere Else". Continuing from a previous post, in reviewing Anelli's portraits of Abramović's performance, I am eerily reminded of Jan Ader's work: "I'm too sad to tell you". In retrospective, Jan Ader's collective works play with the idea of Conceptualism, questioning the relationship between the artist, the art and the audience.

A little late is better than never.

I've always enjoyed intelligent, socio-political commentaries, particularly ones that are playful and displayed in unconventional places.

Yes, I do consider some forms of "Graffiti" art, and no, I don't consider "tagging" street art. There is a very important distinction to be made between Street Art and Graffiti.

Of course, people will gawk when Banksy's work has been painted over, but the basis of graffiti as a form of self-expression depends on it being temporal and fluid. We shouldn't morn the fact that Banksy's work ~~is coming-and-going~~ has come and gone, instead we should celebrate the fact that it was here, as part of Toronto's living, malleable urban landscape. We should, however, mourn the fact that there aren't more talented locals, like Dan Bergeron, creating large-scale works whose bold aesthetic presence in non-traditional spaces forces the public to engage with issues that directly impact the very streets the art is a part of. Banksy's work acts as a source of critical self-examination. Street art forces us to engage with our surroundings and actively participate in intelligent, critical discourse. Philosopher Cornel West said, “An unexamined life is not worth living […] how do you examine yourself, what happens when you interrogate yourself, what happens when you begin to call into question your tasks and assumptions and unarticulated presuppositions, and begin then to become a different kind of person? The Socratic imperative of examining yourself requires courage, in a way butler and Yates used to say, it takes more courage to examine the dark corners of your own soul then it does for a soldier to fight on a battlefield. Courage to think c-r-i-t-i-c-a-l-l-y, courage is the enabling virtue for any philosopher, for any human being I think in the end. Courage to think, courage to love, courage to hope.”

Today I woke up and my eyes were hemorrhaging. If you've never experienced this, it's the worst. Picture waking up, then imagine that your eyes are bleeding. What more can I say. The worst.

On another note, last Friday I was invited to Julie Fader's "One Night Art Show". I greatly enjoyed her minimalist, pointalist work. I've only known her as a musician so it was interesting to see her wearing a different hat. The event was DJed by Graham Walsh plus, as far as I could tell, no one's eyes were hemorrhaging.

I do, and I cannot get enough of this online campaign. Perhaps it's my childish sense of humour, my teenage mentality, or just my inability to let go of my youth and accept my responsibilities as an adult and revolt by inserting profanities and cliche catch phrases reliving my favourite moments from Judd Apatow and Paul Rudd films in this online Mad Libs-esqe marketing scheme. But this is BRILLIANT - and hilarious at how forced it sounds. If you haven't already I suggest trying it yourself, or don't, because next thing you know it will be 4am and all of your friends will have Facebook wall posts with your supposedly "brilliant", and tired perception of humour that you will undoubtedly regret the next day when you awake again as adult. But, at least you felt young once, all thanks to Rickard's.

SHAQASSO - I AM ART

What I found most interesting about this was not the fact that Shaq seems to have managed to put together a rather interesting ensemble of art in a variety of mediums, with or without the help of Flag's full-time directors, but his brief and somewhat understated commentary is so genuine that one cannot help but appreciate his unique and refreshing perspective on size in relation to art and society - derived from his over-sized personality (and physical presence) - "I am art", Shaq proclaims. Paraphrasing Chuck Close, Shaq has done a much better job curating an art exhibition than I would have done shooting hoops. On a personal level, I enjoy seeing alternative approaches towards curating contemporary art in ways that appeal to broader audiences - in this case celebrity curators. Whether "Size DOES Matter" will strengthen the reputation of the artists and gallery is yet to be seen, but what can be said is that the exhibit, and Shaqasso's participation, will not be forgotten - whether its intentions are purist or not.

Last night one of the bands I manage, Giant Hand, did a little fill-in gig for some extra cash that turned into a headlining spot at the Tranzac. MTV was there for an interview and filmed his performance for "On The Radar".

The following day we met up with Mitch Fillion of Southern Souls, drove out to The Port Lands, parked his car and led him off the grid, over some fences, across some ice and onto an abandoned barge to film a few songs. Somewhere between the cut-in-half barge, the frozen lake, the rusted ships, the dead winter air, the complete isolation and Kirk's echoing voice the experience was unreal. Until Giant Hand's Southern Souls performance is online (which probably won't be until early March - same for On The Radar) check out other bands on the site.

My flight back from Havana was delayed twice so I only caught the final few minutes of the Super Bowl but I was happy to discover that a Google ad I had previously blogged about was squeezed in between the rest of the multi-million dollar 30 second spots. I haven't watched all the ads yet, but I really love what Google did. There's something about its simplicity and its ability to create a "meaningful" narrative that's really fresh in comparison to the other Super Bowl spots - not to mention the fact that it's framing Google in a new light; as something relatable to all of us and as something more than just a search engine, as something we can all use to create and share.

This evening I attended MASS Talk No. 8 which featured a presentation followed by a Q&A session with Jowi Taylor.

"During his decade-long tenure at CBC Radio, Jowi Taylor was host, writer and co-producer of such notable series as Global-Village, The Wire (winner of a 2006 Peabody Award), The Nerve (currently re-running Sunday nights on Radio Two) and Invisible Cities.

Jowi's independent project Six String Nation explores history, geography, identity and the shifting parameters of Canadian culture through the lens not just of music but of one very special guitar."

MASS LBP

Although I was fashionably late and missed the majority of Taylor's talk, what I found most interesting was the personal revelation of his inability to secure funding for such a national, and iconic, cultural movement - as a direct result of political elections and red tape within the arts and culture community at a national level. The Six String Nation goes beyond highlighting the development of a Canadian musical identity and can be viewed as a new, unified cultural signifier of Canada. Unlike the tired beaver or the over-saturated image of an inukshuk, the Six String Nation is an emblem of Canada's past as well as an opportunity to showcase it's future, providing a level of cultural accessibly that is relatable to all Canadians.

The Six String Nation project is the ideal branding of Canada's malleable identity - past, present, and future - and as preparations are made for 150! it will be interesting to see if Taylor's vision will be consumed by obsession or embraced by a nation - hopefully the latter.

A sweet little DIY, zombie-filled video by an awesome band based out of Toronto. Black Hat Brigade have been around for a couple years now and have been written (and raved) about on local blogs like i(heart)music and blogTO. They're a phenomenal sight live, and their EP and full-length album "FATHERS", released this past summer, are also worth their weight in gold - resonating up-beat, edgier Wolf Parade-like sounds ("Swords" is my personal favourite).

Although Canadians don't celebrate Black Friday, we can't help but be bombarded by American holidays - or campaigns. ADBUSTER's call for a Wildcat General Strike as part of the "Buy Nothing Day" campaign is an interesting, poignant, and extremely relevant moratorium considering the current financial state of the world as well as GEN X,Y & Z's general attitude towards consumption. Working for an advertising agency I face somewhat of a moral conundrum yet I'm inspired by the fundamental ideas of this "grassroots", movement and recognize that as consumers activists we have to change the way in which we "consume".

I'm a big fan of a Canadian music blog called i(heart)music - not just because they've been very kind to my friends, but because their musical taste is very similar to mine. They've been a big part of expanding my album collection, highlighting local bands from cities with less access to larger audiences. Recently they released their list of "30 Hottest Canadian Bands" for 2009, and I was pleased to see my good friend Kirk, under the moniker Giant Hand, make number twenty one! If you follow my blog you know I've done a lot of work with Kirk and I'm a huge fan of everything he does. I just want to say congratulations Giant Hand, if the Daniel Johnston concert was any indication I predict next year you'll break the top 20 (if not the top 10)!

The past few months haven't been too kind. I've been working on re-editing some older works (along with creating some new ones) but it has been a long and arduous battle. I've completed CHILDHOOD'S END V.2 that comes in two forms: a single channel 6 minute video ready for web, DVD and TV distribution; and a dual channel video designed as a larger more complex installation piece to be accompanied by various fragmented objects and a specific seating arrangement.

Giant Hand's first TO performance was phenomenal - the audio quality at The Mod Club was unbelievably clean - better than the album! Watch for a music video in the not to distant future!

Daniel Johnston and his brother Dick, and tour manager/guitarist Brett can do no wrong, they're what all artists should strive be be. I can't even describe how much I'm in awe of what they continue to do - unreal experience.

Synopsis:

CHILDHOOD’S END is a short autobiographical self-examination, exploring “who I am” by reflecting on a range of childhood memories and emotions. Guided by the topics of loss, death, and nostalgia, CHILDHOOD’S END acts as a form of therapeutic analysis, probing the darker side of childhood innocence and the loss thereof. The film is also an experiment in the materiality of film, juxtaposing hand-coloured Super8 footage with highly pixelated digital media. The dichotomy of old and new helps articulate the dying relationship between time and space, blurring the line between the past and the present, as well as reality and the make-believe. The non-linear narrative is an eclectic mix of events, people, objects, and emotions melted together in a tenuous journey of salvation and restoration.

Synopsis:

روف راد (HOME OF THE FUR) examines the concept of voicelessness in regards to social and political injustices, and crimes against humanity, unheard around the world. Using child-like drawings and poetry in juxtaposition with harsh photographs of reality, HOME OF THE FUR attempts to provide a sense of youthful optimism in an ageing land filled with deafening cries of sorrow. The film is segmented into three conceptually and visually original acts playing on words (“Are Two Pee U.N.Voiced?” is a reference to the United Nations Responsibility to Protect (R2P)), and attempting to view this complex and devastating genocide in the most simplistic manner: from a child’s point of view. However the film does not, by any means, make-light of the genocide, rather it aims to articulate the vulnerability of the Darfurian people, not as a plea for pity but instead as a signal for hope, and a testament to the human will and the power to survive.

Chapter I: I Spy with my little eye genocide& murder (0:00-4:30min)

Sometimes when I sleep,
I think there is something under my bed.
When I ask, “who is there?”
The silence responds by filling me with uncertainty.

Chapter II: Are Two Pee U.N.voiced? (4:30-5:50min)

I try to climb the tree
But I am too short.
Billy tells me he can climb it,
And I am incapable.
This only makes me taller.

Chapter III: If we weren’t vulnerable, then we would be secure (5:50-8:53min)

When I look out my window at night,
I see thousands of people shining down on me.
But where are their smiles in the hot sun?
